Sheet Steel & Stainless Steel Tooling
for the Rotational Moulding Industries
You are here:   Radan / 3D Development
Here at Crossfield Excalibur Ltd we use Radan 05 to assist in the manufacture of your Rotational Moulding tooling.
The following steps will give you an insight to the way we process 3D data into flat sheet development and back again into the 3D form(Actual Tool)

Firstly we produce or import a 3D model preferably a Step or iges file. At this stage we will add the required contractions to allow for the plastic shrinkage

Then we select the surfaces we would like to develop and lay a virtual skin on the model

Once all the required surfaces are selected we then unfold them to produce a flat blank development, parts can be unfolded directly into the sheet metal part editor, ready for onward processing. This enables a smooth and efficient workflow from design to manufacture.

Unfolding parameters, such as bend allowances, can be controlled independently of the geometry, this enables an accurate development that is based on actual bending machines and tooling to be used in production. This leads to more accurate flat blanks, more accurate folding and ultimately, a higher quality product.

We also use Radan to flatten models, such as intersecting cylinders, producing complex profiles in the developed shape. In order to manufacture such shapes efficiently on CNC machinery where the cutting entities available are typically lines and arcs, the software can automatically translate these complex profiles into a series of line and arc elements. The system is designed to produce the minimum number of geometries necessary to make the part to the required accuracy. The benefit is quicker lead times and better quality parts.

Once we have translated the 3D model into 2D data, we then send the profiles for laser cutting, again benefiting from highly accurate cutting technology to produce the quick and accurate developed flat steel patterns

The lasered flat patterns are then processed in the toolroom to develop back into the 3d form that is the finished tooling.
